Course Description: As spiritual directors we need to attend to our own soul work in order to faithfully companion those who seek us out. This course will explore a variety of spiritual practices to refresh our spirits and nurture our souls. We will practice individually as well as having the opportunity to share our experiences with our classmates. Ways to help our directees engage in spiritual practice will also be discussed. Drawing from the wisdom of a variety of religious traditions, we will discover ways to integrate spiritual practices into our daily lives so our very life can become Practice.
Who may participate: Persons engaged in the ministry of spiritual direction, as well as those preparing for that ministry, who have a longing to explore soul work.
Course requirements: Completion of the readings, exploration of spiritual practices, regular participation and sharing with classmates and the instructor.
Instructor: The Rev. Jane E. Vennard is Louise Warren Iliff Senior Adjunct Faculty in prayer and spirituality at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. In addition to Iliff, Jane has taught at the Pacific School of Religion, Vancouver School of Theology, Columbia Seminary, and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She is a regular faculty presenter with The Upper Room Academy for Spiritual Formation and teaches classes and leads retreats in a variety of ecumenical settings. Jane is engaged in a private practice of spiritual direction and is the author of numerous articles and seven books including Colorado Book Award winner Embracing the World: Praying for Justice and Peace (2003) and A Praying Congregation: The Art of Teaching Spiritual Practice (2005). Jane’s most recent book is Fully Awake and Truly Alive: Spiritual Practices to Nurture Your Soul (2013).
